Tominiyi Owolabi

Dr. Tominiyi Owolabi (Tominiyi), an Eisenhower fellow for leadership, is the Managing Partner of Olaniwun Ajayi LP. He has been a mainstay in the oil and gas industry for about 30 years, and in this time, he has gained significant experience and earned his place at front-seat of the significant developments in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. Having built a reputation for simplifying complex commercial deals – he is now relied on by International Oil Companies, Indigenous Oil Companies, National Oil Corporations, and international law firms, to navigate the legal aspects of complex oil and gas projects that involve the Nigerian oil and gas industry.

In the past year, Tominiyi led the team that advised the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Ltd (NLNG) on the circa US$3Billion financing of its seventh liquefaction train. This deal has become a market standard for financing LNG projects across the world and was rightly awarded the African LNG deal of the year at the 2020 Project Finance International (PFI) Awards. He was also involved in pioneering the use of prepayment financing, when he advised NLNG on its circa $2.5 billion pre- payment agreement with NNPC for the development of upstream gas development projects. He continues to shape the industry with his work on financing refineries, most recently leading the team that advised on the financing and construction of the 5,000-bpd modular refinery developed by Waltersmith Refining and Petrochemical Company Limited in Ibigwe, Imo State. The refinery which was recently commissioned is the largest modular refinery in the Nigeria today.

Tominiyi’s experience spans the disparate yet interconnected fields of project finance, capital markets regulatory, mergers and acquisitions, oil and gas financings and asset acquisition. Beyond being a trusted legal adviser, his clients have come to rely on his ability to give practical advice that meets business needs – a skill he has developed first with an MBA from the Manchester Business School and a Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Liverpool.
